Culture, shops and cosiness in Groningen
In approximately 30 minutes you'll be in vibrant Groningen.
Climb the Martinitoren and wander through atmospheric, historic streets. Peaceful spots and lively student areas alternate here.
Sights worth seeing include the Groninger Museum and the characteristic quays of the Hoge and Lage der Aa. The modern Forum Groningen is also worth a visit, with a rooftop cinema, impressive views, and Storyworld, among other attractions.

Attractions in Leeuwarden
Leeuwarden is located half an hour's drive in the other direction. Leeuwarden offers cosy shops, pavement cafes, and lively squares. Be sure to visit the leaning Oldehove tower, the city's symbol, and discover art and culture at the Fries Museum. The Princessehof, housed in a beautiful city palace, is also well worth a visit. There's a free public city walk and also an enjoyable street art tour through the city.

Dokkum with its Bastion Fortifications
As the northernmost fortified city in the Netherlands, Dokkum breathes history. Surrounding the city centre are the characteristic Dokkum Bollwarks, a hexagonal system of defensive works. From the bastions, you can enjoy beautiful views of the city and the surrounding landscape.
The impressive Bonifatius Church and the atmospheric Bonifatius Chapel are also well worth a visit. In the centre, you'll also find the Dokkum Ice Fountain, part of the famous 11fountains. And for lovers of speciality beer, a stop at the Bonifatius Brewery is highly recommended.

Lauwersmeer National Park
At the edge of Friesland and Groningen lies the expansive Lauwersmeer National Park. The area is a paradise for birdwatchers. From various vantage points, you have the chance to spot numerous species.
In addition, the park is ideal for walking, cycling or simply enjoying the tranquility. At night, it is extra special here: as an official Dark Sky Park, you can admire an impressive starry sky.

Lauwersoog is also nice to visit with its fish auction and harbour. Grab a fish from the ‘good fishermen’ at ‘The Isle of Wight and enjoy the view from their roof terrace.

The ferry ports of Lauwersoog and Holwerd are just a short distance away, making it easy to plan a day trip or an extension to your holiday to Schiermonnikoog or Ameland.
